A home standby generator system is a permanently installed backup power solution that automatically provides electricity to your home during a power outage. Unlike portable generators, these systems are always ready to operate and require no manual setup or refueling during an emergency.
Standby Generator Unit
The heart of the system—usually powered by natural gas, propane, or diesel. It’s installed outside your home, similar to an air conditioning unit.
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
This intelligent switch monitors utility power and automatically transfers the electrical load to the generator when it detects an outage. When utility power returns, it switches back.
Fuel Supply
The generator is connected to a fuel source—commonly natural gas or propane—for continuous operation without manual refueling.
Load Management System (Optional)
Helps prioritize which circuits or appliances get power, especially useful for smaller generators or larger homes.
Control Panel & Monitoring Tools
These allow for local or remote monitoring of the generator’s status, performance, and service needs.
When the power goes out—whether due to storms, wildfires, grid failures, or other disruptions—a home standby system automatically detects the outage and restores power within seconds. It keeps essential systems running, such as:
Lights
Heating and cooling systems
Refrigerators and freezers
Medical equipment
Internet and communication systems
Well pumps and sump pumps
This means your home stays safe, comfortable, and connected—no matter the weather or grid conditions.

As the names imply, the 2 types of system designs are whole home and partial home backup.
In a whole home system all of the electrical loads are backed up by the home standby generator.
In a partial home system, selected load are wired into a subpanel that the backup generator powers during an outage, leaving the remaining circuits unpowered.
